The word “resort” can be used to describe a number of different places involving vacations, tourism and recreation. Resorts can be entire destinations or simply individual commercial establishments. In the United States, a more recent use of the term refers to establishments that cater to the vacation and recreation wants of their guests without them having to leave the premises. Some resorts are associated with a specific type of recreation, like theme parks, for example. Walt Disney generated almost 17 billion U.S. dollars from its parks and resorts in 2016. Other resorts which focus around a particular activity include ski resorts. During the 2015/2016 winter season, there were 463 ski resorts in the U.S. , visited by just fewer than 53 million skiers . The most expensive ski resort in the U.S. is Beaver Creek in Colorado. Colorado is one of the most popular ski destinations in the U.S., as six of the top ten most luxurious, and expensive, ski resorts can be found in the state. The largest ski resort in North America is Whistler Blackcomb Ski Resort in British Columbia, Canada. Resorts which are individual commercial establishments often refer to hotels. In 2015, the largest hotel company in the world in terms of revenue was UK-based InterContinental Hotels Group, generating 24 billion U.S. dollars. The largest U.S.-based company was Marriott International. Wyndham Hotel Group had the largest number of hotels from the leading brands as of January 2015, with 7,654 properties in operation.
